With so many beach sessions on the calendar for the 2017 season I wanted to share some tips to making it great!!!!Living in Southwest Michigan we are blessed living so close to Lake Michigan…and living on the side where we get to experience gorgeous sunsets night and night.
One of my favorite sessions to do in the Summer is Lake Michigan Couples, Maternity and Family sessions. Like in Life timing is everything! ~Morning Sessions~ I prefer to do sessions first thing in the morning normally an 1-1 1/2 hours after sunrise before the sun gets to high in the sky and the temps become uncomfortable. The skies are always bluer and the beaches are populated with visitors just yet. ~Evening/Sunset Sessions~ I prefer to do evening sessions about two hours before the sun is scheduled to set. If we do it before then on a sunny day then the light is to harsh over the lake. Think of the lake like a big mirror reflecting the sun!! I don’t know anyone who likes to have images of them squinting….or wearing their beach sunglasses! So we schedule our sessions for two hour before sunset and that allows the light to just get prettier and prettier through out the session as the sun sets! The downside of a sunset session is that in the Summer the sun sets late, and though we all love the longer days, its really tough on little ones. I find that if you have a little one and don’t mind not having the sunset images then go for a morning session since kids are much more compliant in the mornings than 7:30/ 8:00pm at night! ~What to wear~ With any session I do, I always suggest families coordinate but not match. Pick three colors and work within those colors and tones. Creams look great on the beach. Long flowy sundresses are a favorite of mine on the beach as well. You don’t have to worry about shoes….we love barefoot! ~With Toddlers remember~ We love the idea of this perfect family session on the beach, but something we need to remember if this isn’t a place you go to with your children please please make sure to visit a few times before the actual shoot. When planning a shoot we build up in our head this "perfect picture" and we all know when working with children it all revolves around them. When a child who has never been to the beach arrives it can be overwhelming sometimes its wavy and that can be scary and sometimes they don’t like the feel of the sand on their toes or hand or basically anywhere lol~. So I always ask for families to visit the beach and introduce or reintroduce if its been a while to this experience before the day of the shoot. Happy Summer~ |
